What respite care means
A short stay in a real home. Eight residents, one table.
Respite care is a short stay for someone who is usually cared for at home. Your mother, father, or spouse moves in with us for a while, keeps their routine, and is looked after day and night. You get to stop being the nurse for a few days and go back to being a daughter, a son, or a husband.
Because Gifted Touch is a home with room for only eight residents, a respite guest is not a temporary bed on a corridor. They eat at the same table, sit in the same living room, and are looked after by the same caregivers as everyone else here.
When families come to us
The reasons are usually simple.
You are worn out
Caregiver exhaustion is real, and it creeps up slowly. A week of proper sleep is often what keeps a family able to keep caring at home for another year.
You have your own surgery or illness
When the caregiver is the one who needs care, someone has to take over. We can step in for the weeks you need to recover.
A wedding, a funeral, a holiday
Life keeps happening. A short stay means you can travel knowing your loved one is safe, fed, and looked after by a nurse.
You are considering a move, and want to be sure
Many families use a short stay to see how their loved one settles before deciding about long-term care. There is no better way to know than to try it.
What a stay includes
The same care our long-term residents get.
A respite guest is cared for exactly as a permanent resident is. Nothing is scaled back because the stay is short.
Around-the-clock support
Caregivers on site day and night, with one caregiver for every four residents.
Registered nurse oversight
The home is owned and run by a registered nurse, so medication and any change in health is handled professionally.
Medication management
Bring the medications and the schedule. We take it from there and hand it back to you at the end of the stay.
Meals, laundry, and personal care
Home-cooked meals, help with bathing and dressing, and clean laundry, all included in the stay.
Memory care, if it is needed
We are a memory care home. A respite guest living with dementia, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's gets the same routine and the same familiar faces as everyone else. See how we do memory care.

Perhaps the part families underestimate. A short stay usually means more conversation in a week than a month alone at home.

Length of stay, dates, and cost are worked out case by case, because no two families need the same thing. The quickest way to find out whether we can help is to call and tell us what is going on.
You are welcome to come and see the home first. Most families do, and we would rather you did. Bring your loved one along if that is easier.
